Archetype's Exodus: A Deep Dive for the Dedicated Sci-Fi Aficionado.

For a distinct breed of science-fiction devotee, the revelation of Exodus stood as the biggest news from a major gaming awards ceremony. Curiously, those very fans might not have grasped its full importance during the initial showcase.

Exodus, the first project from a recently established studio staffed with ex- talent from a renowned RPG developer, was first teased a couple of years prior. At the latest event, the development team provided an targeted release window of 2027, accompanied by a action-packed trailer. Ahead of this showcase, the studio's leadership elaborated on some of the authentic scientific theories that form the foundation for the game's universe: relativistic time effects, genetic alteration, and galactic expansion. These are all appropriately dense ideas, which are inherently difficult to express in a brief, cinematic trailer.

“I would have preferred some of those fascinating and novel ideas were shown in the trailer. My takeaway was ‘standard man in space,’” wrote one viewer. Another responded, “My impression was ‘this is like a well-known space opera RPG at home.’” Feedback in fan hubs were equally divided.

The trailer's approach undoubtedly makes sense from a business standpoint. When trying to capture attention during a hours-long onslaught of game announcements, what sells better: A team contemplating the complexities of Einsteinian physics? Or enormous robots blowing up while additional mechs shoot plasma from their armor? However, in choosing spectacle, the developers neglected to include the more nuanced concepts that make Exodus one of the more exciting hard sci-fi games in development. Let's explore further.

The Celestial Conundrum

Does Exodus contain aliens? Perhaps. The answer is nuanced. Recall that shot near the opening of the trailer, showing a being with ashen skin and metal components integrated into their flesh. That was surely an alien, yes? In the end hinges on your stance regarding one of the game's central existential inquiries: If you applied Ship of Theseus philosophy to the human DNA, is what results still a human being?

“We want the Celestials... for a player that isn't spend considerable amounts of time into learning the backstory, to still understand the core concept that they're evolved humans, understand that they’re an foe you have to face... But also, ultimately, make sure it's fun and that they're compelling and that they are satisfying to encounter,” explained the studio's general manager.

Grasping how these otherworldly beings aren't strictly aliens requires wrestling with immense expanses of both the cosmos and time. Time dilation — the scientific principle that time moves slower for faster-moving objects — is an fundamental hard line of Exodus’ fictional framework. Here are the basics: Humanity abandons a dying Earth in the 23rd century for a far-off corner of the Milky Way. Due to time dilation, some human travelers arrive ages before others. Those firstcomers radically altered their DNA and assumed the “Celestial” title.

“There’s different levels of evolution. The people who got to the Centauri cluster first... had tens of thousands of years of evolution into the Celestials... They really see unaltered humans as fundamentally unevolved, inferior, not really fit for the upper echelons of society,” stated the game's story head.

Exodus is set about 40,000 years in the future. Ponder that scale — that's the equivalent of all of human civilization repeated ten times over. Now contemplate what humans would evolve into if they spent ten entire human histories mastering the frontiers of biotech. You would absolutely not recognize the result as human. You might very well believe you're seeing an alien. The scariest strain of Celestial, known as the Mara-Yama, can assume various forms. Some possess talons and blades and stand enormously tall. Others are encased in chitinous shells. According to expanded universe lore, when Mara-Yama travel between stars, their physical forms can degenerate into little more than a fleshy blob attached to a head.

A Universe of Ideas

Among the pyrotechnics, energy weapons, and war beasts, you might have caught snippets of otherworldly technology in the trailer. The protagonist, Jun Aslan, interacts with a metallic machine that produces a purple glow. A spaceship jets into a portal and is gone at incredible speed. This all seems beyond human achievement, the kind of tech ascribed to a highly advanced civilization. Yet, these are further examples of wonders that appear alien but are firmly grounded in humanity's own journey.

Beyond the core development team, the Exodus universe is being authored by what the narrative lead called a duo of “sci-fi giants.” One acclaimed author has already published a doorstopper novel set in the universe, with another planned, while another prolific writer has written a series of short stories. Bringing such established science-fiction writers into the project years before the game's release has permitted the studio to develop a layered fictional universe as a foundation for the game.

“It was really a joint venture. We had set some parameters, and working with him, he would have ideas... and we would work to see how they all integrated... With someone of that caliber, you don't want to constrain him. You want to give him latitude,” the narrative director said of the collaboration.

One notable scene shows Jun appearing to mold the ground beneath him, fashioning stone into a makeshift bridge. This material, called livestone, is controlled by neural commands from Celestials or augmented enforcers — descendants of later human arrivals who were granted specific technologies by the Celestials. Since Jun exhibits this ability, one might wonder about his origins.

“Jun's not technically a Uranic human... Jun is sort of a modified version, for want of a better term,” clarified the writer, adding that the ability to interact with Celestial technology is a “important element of the game.”

The sheer scale of the Exodus setting — both in physical space and historical time — means there is plenty of room for multiple stories to be told, pulling from the same established rules without creating overlap.

A Broad Narrative Canvas

Although Exodus has been publicly known for a couple of years and won't arrive, several stories have already told within its universe. The first major novel explores the connection between a Uranic human and a woman whose ship arrived tens of thousands later than planned, making Celestials completely alien to her experience. An episode of a television series recounts a heartbreaking story about a father pursuing his daughter across star systems, with time dilation resulting in life-altering effects on their family; by the time he finds her, she has lived many years.

The game itself is centered on “Jun’s story,” set on the planet Lidon — a world mostly left by Celestials that has become a refuge. A corrupting influence known as “the Rot” has begun corroding everything, including essential life support systems, and Jun must use his Celestial-like powers to {find a solution|stop
