Books I Didn't Complete Exploring Are Stacking by My Bedside. Could It Be That's a Good Thing?

This is slightly embarrassing to reveal, but here goes. A handful of books sit next to my bed, all incompletely read. Within my smartphone, I'm some distance through over three dozen audio novels, which seems small compared to the forty-six digital books I've abandoned on my digital device. This does not include the growing stack of pre-release versions beside my coffee table, vying for endorsements, now that I have become a professional novelist in my own right.

Beginning with Determined Finishing to Intentional Abandonment

At first glance, these stats might seem to confirm recently expressed opinions about today's focus. A writer commented not long back how effortless it is to lose a reader's attention when it is fragmented by digital platforms and the constant updates. The author stated: “It could be as people's attention spans change the writing will have to adapt with them.” But as an individual who used to stubbornly complete whatever title I began, I now consider it a personal freedom to put down a novel that I'm not connecting with.

Our Finite Duration and the Glut of Choices

I wouldn't think that this practice is caused by a brief concentration – more accurately it stems from the awareness of time passing quickly. I've consistently been affected by the monastic principle: “Hold death daily in mind.” A different reminder that we each have a only limited time on this Earth was as shocking to me as to anyone else. However at what other point in human history have we ever had such direct entry to so many amazing masterpieces, at any moment we want? A wealth of riches awaits me in every bookshop and on every device, and I aim to be purposeful about where I focus my attention. Is it possible “DNF-ing” a book (term in the publishing industry for Incomplete) be not a sign of a limited intellect, but a selective one?

Choosing for Understanding and Self-awareness

Particularly at a time when publishing (and thus, commissioning) is still controlled by a certain social class and its issues. Even though exploring about individuals different from our own lives can help to develop the ability for understanding, we also read to think about our personal lives and place in the universe. Until the works on the displays more accurately represent the backgrounds, stories and issues of possible individuals, it might be very challenging to hold their attention.

Current Authorship and Audience Attention

Of course, some writers are indeed effectively creating for the “today's interest”: the short style of selected modern novels, the focused pieces of different authors, and the brief chapters of various modern stories are all a impressive demonstration for a briefer style and style. Furthermore there is plenty of craft guidance aimed at securing a audience: refine that initial phrase, polish that beginning section, elevate the drama (more! more!) and, if writing crime, put a victim on the beginning. That suggestions is completely sound – a prospective representative, publisher or reader will devote only a few precious minutes choosing whether or not to forge ahead. It is little reason in being difficult, like the person on a workshop I attended who, when challenged about the storyline of their novel, announced that “it all becomes clear about 75% of the through the book”. No writer should subject their follower through a series of 12 labours in order to be grasped.

Creating to Be Clear and Granting Space

But I absolutely write to be clear, as far as that is feasible. On occasion that needs leading the consumer's hand, steering them through the story step by economical point. At other times, I've understood, understanding takes perseverance – and I must allow me (and other creators) the freedom of exploring, of adding depth, of digressing, until I hit upon something true. An influential author contends for the story discovering fresh structures and that, instead of the traditional plot structure, “alternative patterns might help us envision novel methods to make our stories dynamic and authentic, continue making our works novel”.

Change of the Novel and Current Platforms

Accordingly, both opinions converge – the novel may have to evolve to suit the contemporary reader, as it has constantly achieved since it originated in the 18th century (as we know it now). It could be, like previous writers, tomorrow's writers will return to releasing in parts their novels in newspapers. The future such writers may already be releasing their content, chapter by chapter, on online services like those accessed by many of regular users. Art forms shift with the times and we should let them.

Beyond Brief Focus

But let us not claim that all shifts are all because of limited attention spans. Were that true, brief fiction collections and flash fiction would be considered considerably more {commercial|profitable|marketable
