Delving into this Planet's Most Ghostly Grove: Contorted Trees, UFOs and Eerie Tales in Transylvania.
"Locals dub this spot an enigmatic zone of Transylvania," explains an experienced guide, the air from his lungs producing puffs of condensation in the chilly dusk atmosphere. "Numerous individuals have vanished here, it's thought there's a gateway to a different realm." This expert is escorting a guest on a night walk through commonly known as the planet's most ghostly grove: Hoia-Baciu, an area covering one square mile of ancient local woods on the outskirts of the Romanian city of Cluj-Napoca.
A Long History of the Unexplained
Reports of unusual events here extend back hundreds of years – this woodland is named after a local shepherd who is said to have vanished in the far-off times, together with 200 of his sheep. But Hoia-Baciu achieved international attention in 1968, when a military technician named Emil Barnea took a picture of what he described as a UFO hovering above a round opening in the heart of the forest.
Numerous entered this place and vanished without trace. But rest assured," he adds, turning to his guest with a smirk. "Our excursions have a perfect safety record."
In the years that followed, Hoia-Baciu has drawn yogis, shamans, ufologists and ghost hunters from around the globe, eager to feel the unusual forces reported to reverberate through the forest.
Modern Threats
Although it is a top global destinations for lovers of the paranormal, the grove is facing danger. The outlying areas of Cluj-Napoca – an innovative digital cluster of a population exceeding 400,000, known as the tech capital of the region – are advancing, and real estate firms are advocating for permission to remove the forest to construct residential buildings.
Aside from a few hectares home to regionally uncommon specific tree species, this woodland is not officially protected, but Marius believes that the company he was instrumental in creating – a local conservation effort – will assist in altering this, encouraging the local administrators to recognise the forest's significance as a tourist attraction.
Spooky Experiences
When small sticks and seasonal debris split and rustle beneath their shoes, the guide describes some of the traditional stories and alleged paranormal happenings here.
- A popular tale describes a young child going missing during a group gathering, later to reappear half a decade later with complete amnesia of her experience, having not aged a single day, her garments without the slightest speck of dust.
- More common reports explain mobile phones and imaging devices inexplicably shutting down on venturing inside.
- Reactions range from absolute fear to states of ecstasy.
- Various visitors state noticing strange rashes on their skin, detecting ghostly voices through the trees, or sense fingers clutching them, although convinced they're by themselves.
Scientific Investigations
Although numerous of the accounts may be impossible to confirm, there are many things visibly present that is certainly unusual. All around are trees whose trunks are bent and twisted into fantastical shapes.
Multiple explanations have been suggested to account for the abnormal growth: powerful storms could have bent the saplings, or typically increased electromagnetic fields in the earth explain their crooked growth.
But scientific investigations have found insufficient proof.
The Notorious Meadow
Marius's excursions enable participants to engage in a little scientific inquiry of their own. Upon reaching the clearing in the woods where Barnea took his famous UFO pictures, he passes the visitor an EMF meter which detects energy patterns.
"We're venturing into the most energetic area of the forest," he says. "See what you can find."
The vegetation suddenly stop dead as we emerge into a perfect circle. The single plant life is the short grass beneath the ground; it's obvious that it hasn't been mown, and seems that this bizarre meadow is wild, not the creation of people.
Fact Versus Fiction
The broader region is a place which inspires creativity, where the border is blurred between truth and myth. In countryside villages belief persists in strigoi ("screamers") – undead, appearance-altering vampires, who rise from their graves to frighten local communities.
The famous author's well-known character Dracula is always connected with Transylvania, and Bran Castle – an ancient structure located on a rocky outcrop in the Carpathian Mountains – is keenly marketed as "the count's residence".
But including myth-shrouded Transylvania – truly, "the land past the woods" – appears tangible and comprehensible in contrast to the haunted grove, which seem to be, for reasons nuclear, climatic or purely mythical, a center for human imaginative power.
"Inside these woods," Marius comments, "the boundary between fact and fiction is remarkably blurred."
