Larry Summers Resigns from AI Company's Directors
Ex-Treasury chief Larry Summers is exiting the governing body at the artificial intelligence firm, just several days after a batch of emails between him and deceased financier the disgraced billionaire became public.
The economist remarked in a release that he was "thankful for the privilege to have served, excited about the potential of the company, and eagerly await observing their progress".
The former Harvard president, who once headed Harvard University, stated on Monday that he would be withdrawing from public roles due to his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein.
Digital Correspondence
The newly public communications showed that the economist corresponded with Jeffrey Epstein until the 24 hours preceding the financier's 2019 detention for accused sex trafficking of underage individuals.
In another announcement, the AI firm expressed it accepted the economist's determination to resign.
"We value his significant contributions and the viewpoint he provided to the Board," OpenAI commented.
Political Context
This development follows after the two houses of the legislative branch agreed on Tuesday to endorse a legislation that would compel the Department of Justice to make public its records on Jeffrey Epstein.
The legislation will subsequently head to the administration of the White House for approval. He has stated he intends to endorse the bill, after changing his position on the matter following objections from his base.
Correspondence Findings
A collection of Epstein-connected correspondence released by the legislative panel days ago included several prominent individuals in the billionaire's previous network, without implying any legal wrongdoing by those people.
The communications revealed that Summers and Epstein regularly had dinners together, with Epstein often seeking to link the academic to influential global figures.
Individual Statement
After the messages were shared with the wider community, Summers stated he accepted "full responsibility for my poor choice to continue communicating with Mr Epstein".
He added that he desired "to reestablish trust and mend connections with the persons most important to me".
Professional History
Summers held high-level positions under two Democratic presidents; functioning as economic leader under Bill Clinton, and as leader of the White House economic team under the former leader.
He presided over Harvard from 2001 to 2006 and continues to be a academic there. When announcing his departure from public roles previously on this week, he stated he would maintain his academic responsibilities.
Other Impacts
Following the economist's declaration on earlier this week, the Center for American Progress, a left-leaning research organization in the capital where Summers was a senior fellow, announced that the economist was not affiliated with the group.
Summers entered the board of OpenAI, which develops the AI chatbot, in 2023 - following a unsuccessful effort to replace its top executive Sam Altman.
