News has broken that original stars Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson are returning to their iconic characters in the next chapter of the Hunger Games film series, titled The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. The film is currently in production.

A Significant Reunion for Fans

The actors are returning as Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark, the characters they made famous. Industry whispers indicate their cameos will likely occur in a brief glimpse ahead, as the main film series concluded with their characters living in peace.

This represents the sixth film in the blockbuster Hunger Games franchise.

The Source Material

Sunrise on the Reaping draws its story from a newly published work by series creator Suzanne Collins. It serves as the follow-up prequel after 2023's The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes. For this project is Francis Lawrence, who was behind nearly all the previous films in the series.

The film's events are set in the years leading up to the first Hunger Games, focusing on a young Haymitch Abernathy. Haymitch, who would later become Katniss's mentor, is shown as a tribute in the deadly 50th Hunger Games.

• Ralph Fiennes will appear as a younger version of the menacing President Snow.
